Traffic signs and what they mean

Every traffic sign we rent out, with the official description from the Belgian Highway Code, what it means on a worksite and whether you need a permit for it. Click a sign for the explanation and to rent it.

Stopping and parking signs

These signs regulate stopping and parking. They apply on the side of the road where they stand, from the sign up to the next junction, on the carriageway and on the verge. Additional panels mark the start and end of the zone, and an inscription can state the period (Highway Code, art. 70). For a move, a skip or a worksite, these are the signs of a temporary parking ban.

Warning signs

Warning signs are triangular with a red border. They warn of a hazard ahead and are normally placed about 150 metres before it (Highway Code, art. 66.2). On a worksite they announce what the driver is about to meet: roadworks, a narrowing, an uneven surface.

Prohibitory signs

Prohibitory signs are round with a red border. They forbid something: a direction, access, overtaking, driving faster than a set speed. At roadworks they close a street or a footpath, or limit the speed along the site.

Mandatory signs

Mandatory signs are round and blue. They impose an obligation: follow a direction, use a cycle path or a footpath. On a worksite they guide traffic around an obstacle or towards a temporary passage.

Information signs

Information signs are rectangular and give information: a diversion, a dead end, the end of roadworks. At roadworks they point out the detour and close off the works zone.

Priority signs

Priority signs decide who goes first. At roadworks they mostly appear where the carriageway is reduced to a single lane: B19 on one side, B21 on the other, so both directions know who has right of way.

Additional panels

Additional panels hang below another traffic sign and complete, specify or limit it (Highway Code, art. 65.2). The M panels, with black lettering on white, make an exception for cyclists or moped riders.

The official description comes from the Belgian Highway Code (Royal Decree of 1 December 1975).
